We are all aware, sprouted grains are much more nutritious than grains as such. Before we begin the process, let’s briefly run through how sprouts are beneficial to us.
In our body certain particles called ‘free-radicals‘ are formed due to various factors in life. These ‘free-radicals’ take away vital electrons from other cells, which in turn can lead to alteration in such cells especially DNA, RNA. Further replications of these cells will give rise to only the altered cells. This can lead to damage to cells or organs and may even lead to death of such cells. This leads to a cascading effect, causing diseases, disorders, cancer etc.. Sprouts are a powerhouse of ‘anti-oxidants‘ (vitamins, minerals, enzymes) which interact with the free-radicals and stop the progression of damage. In short, sprouts put an end to this cascading, damaging effect.
Another important fact is that, raw foods contain oxygen. Dr Otto Warburg, a double Nobel Prize Laureate found that cancer cells grow in oxygen lacking areas.
Sprouts also contain ‘essential fatty acids’ which improve our immune defence mechanism. They also convert proteins into easily absorbable ‘amino-acids’.
There is no reason to not eat sprouts!
The process of sprouting is very simple.
Ingredients: (you can use your choice of grains; process is the same)
Cow Beans – 2 Tbsp
Moth Beans – 2 Tbsp
First wash the grains a couple of times well and drain all the water. Now soak them in fresh water in a container overnight.
Next morning, drain. Place the grains in a sieve as shown in the picture, over an empty container. Cover with 2 layers of paper towel as shown.
After 24 hrs, you will notice sprouts forming. After 48hrs, the sprouts grow further. Ready for use.
Simple Sprouts Salad:
Ingredients for Salad :
Sprouted Beans (I sprouted 2 Tbsp each of Cow Beans and Moth Beans, you can use any sprouts), Finely chopped cucumber 2 Tbsp, Green chilli 1 small chopped fine, Lemon Rind 1/4-1/2 tsp, Lemon Juice – 1/2 tsp, Olive Oil – 1 tsp, salt to taste.
Method: Mix all the ingredients mentioned above. But add oil and salt just before serving, otherwise the salad will leave water and become soggy.
Use as a filling or as an accompaniment to a meal.
