Roti , Phulka is a healthy Indian Flat Bread. On our menu almost everyday! With this recipe you can make rotis completely oil free, yet soft and very healthy.
Whole Wheat Flour – 2 cups
Some extra whole wheat flour for rolling
Water as needed(lukewarm)
Salt – a pinch
Oil – 2 tsp (optional)
First add the salt and oil(if desired) to the flour and mix. Then gradually add lukewarm water and keep mixing feeling the consistency in your palm and fingers. Continue adding water and mixing it in until you reach a soft but not soggy dough consistency.
Cover it and allow it to sit for about 20 min.
Take a lime sized ball of the dough. roll it to make it roughly spherical. Prepare such 4-5 balls. Flatten each one slightly between your palms. Dip this in the additional flour on either side. Place this on the counter / platform. Roll it flat using a rolling pin. If it starts to stick to the rolling pin, dip it again in the flour , continue to roll until its is 5-6 inches in diameter. Try to roll it to uniform thickness all round. (preferably thinner at the edges, thicker in the middle)
Heat the tawa (pan/skillet). Reduce the heat to MEDIUM. Place the rolled roti on the tawa/skillet. Allow it to cook until u see GOOD ‘ bubbles’ on it. Turn it over, wait until u see bubbles.
Transfer it onto the plate on a kitchen towel.
Repeat the procedure with the rest of the dough.
Serve with side dish of your choice.
Tip: For lunch boxes, prepare a wrap with a dry side dish of your choice as a filling; using any spread such as a thin layer of chutney or cheese spreads or margarine.
also while giving it to kids, I spread some ghee or oil on each roti
